Things To Remember With A Family Emergency Plan

By Tammie Caldwell

Many people are concerned about their safety and that of their loved ones. Yet, there are three things to keep in mind when one is working on a family emergency plan. It is important to remember to practice, to have alternatives, and to connect. These three things will help in any situation or at least in most situations when a family is in a natural or man-made disaster.

It is important to put more effort into practicing what one knows. It is good to be informed about many things, but one has to do the work and train themselves and their families based on the knowledge they have. The last thing a person wants is to be caught in a fire with their family and not know what to do or be stuck because they did not practice.

This is why it is important to practice with the family so that they will know what to do when the situation arises. It is not enough to tell them what to do or to read books or listen to someone say what needs to be done. This means teaching children to how to call 911 in an emergency and having a fire drill at different times of the day so that everyone will be ready.

There should also be different plans in place just in case one plan does not work. Sometimes a person might think that they do not have to go the extra mile when planning for a difficult situation. One has to realize that there is never a predictable moment when it comes to disasters of any kind. One might have a plan in place that is designed to work one situation, but it may not work in another.

This calls for several approaches to one situation. One should have a number of plans in place in case something goes wrong or there is a delay of some kind. This also applies to exit routes, different places of safety that one can go to, and different numbers that one can call if one does not work.

It is also important to connect with other people that one might know about in the area where they live. It is always good to have friends or people that one knows very well to help in an emergency. It is usually in difficult times that complete strangers will do the most amazing things for each other. However, one should not wait until something happens to connect with others.

These connections can be made by a number of different means. One can simply work with a community center in the neighborhood that deals with these types of emergencies. They can also talk to professionals in their area about what needs to be done. If there are neighbors that one is familiar with, this is also good since both families can help each other when needed.

These are just a few things to keep in mind when thinking about the safety of the family. It is important to do as much research as possible in order to be prepared. On the other hand, it is even better to actually do what needs to be done.
