Apps From Facebook Help Media Businesses Know What's Trending

The idea of having your pulse on the trends of the world, knowing what topics are being talked about, is something that is very valuable to media industries today. It's also information that companies would like to know about when creating products or services for consumers. At the last F8 summit by Facebook, they have released four applications which allow people to target information that is currently trending among the Facebook community. Let's look at what these four applications are, and how they can be beneficial for businesses and individuals trying to follow trends that are currently happening.

Overview Of The Four API Apps

The first app is one that looks at general trends, both within your own group, and within Facebook itself. The second app allows you to look at hashtags that people are using that are referencing topics that are being discussed today. The third application looks into the specifics of the individuals that are discussing this information, looking at their gender, geography, and age. The final app provides a list of the most popular topics being discussed in order of importance and sheer volume of being discussed.

Benefits Of Using New Apps

Although there are many reasons that people would use these applications, for businesses, it has many possibilities. When taking polls of what people are thinking about real-time, especially during large media events such as an election, American Idol, or even the Superbowl, people can learn what is trending, what topics are hot, and use this information to potentially market to these individuals. This is perfect for businesses that are trying to find out what is trending right now, something that only Twitter has had available for businesses to use up until this point in time.

To tap into media trends that are currently happening, Facebook has come out with four separate applications. These new applications are called Trending, Topic Insights, Topic Feed, and Hashtag Counter. They will enable people to see what is trending at any given time, find out more about who is talking about the trends, present the most popular trends, and also look at what hashtags are being used most.
