By Laura Jones

Many people will have electronic items in their homes that will be powered by batteries. Laptop computers, digital cameras and other everyday items will all require these power sources and from time to time they will suffer a failure and need replacing. With some older or obsolete items replacements may be difficult to source and you will need to shop for hard to find batteries.

The two types of battery most commonly used in electrical devices are available to buy form a few sources. There are the throw away type which when they have run down will just be taken out and replaced with a new one. The other type is a rechargeable cell which can be used over again after being plugged into a power point and recharged.

When selecting your replacement it is important to check the polarity and voltage of the old one so that it can be matched up to the new one. Using a wrong power cell in electrical items can cause damage to the device that may not be repairable. If you are unsure about which one to buy your retailer will be happy to advise you.

A couple of places are available for you to buy your new batteries from and a little care is needed when you are buying. There will be stores in your local area that sells them and also web based companies that stock batteries. If you are purchasing from the high street you should take along the old one which allows you to compare it to the replacement.

When you visit a store to buy a battery there will be many to choose from and if they do not have what you are looking for they may be able to order one in for you. Most stores will have some old stock in their store rooms and they may find what you need tucked away in there. For things such as laptops and cameras it may be easier to visit a shop that only deals with this type of product.

If you are purchasing your batteries online it is useful to get the details from the old cell and have the details to hand when you are browsing. Internet retailers will list their stock on the pages with photographs, detailed descriptions and prices. Many of the sellers will allow you to buy just 1 battery but if you have found a rare item it can be worth buying and extra one.

When you are ordering an item from an online site it should be noted that shipping charges will be added to your bill. Most items will be shipped on a next day basis unless you select an alternative delivery service. Always check your item before taking it out of the packaging if possible in case it needs to be returned.

After replacing a battery it is essential that you dispose of the old one in the correct way. Many batteries can be thrown out with the trash but some will have to be taken to a recycle point. Some rechargeable cells can be repaired and sold again and there are firms who will take your old one and refurbish them.
