What Is New Media In Art?

By Jennifer Marie Anderson

You've probably heard the term "new media" a number of times, whether it is related to art or not. For those who aren't in the know, new media is classified as a litany of digital platforms, each of them designed with interactive purposes in mind. As you can very well imagine, these platforms can be used to help certain artists as well. In order to better understand what new media entails, here are just a few of the more prominent examples to make note of.

Video games is one of the more important points to mention when it comes to the concept of new media. To say that this is vital would be an understatement, especially when you consider how designers have been playing games for years, in most cases. This is one of the most interactive forms of new media, too, which only makes it that much more important. Keep in mind, though, that this is just one example of new media to take into account.

What about CDs, which are also included under the new media umbrella? These can be as interactive as possible, especially when you think about different pieces of software can be loaded onto them. Others may use them for informational purposes, though, which has its usage in digital art. Of course, one can make the reasonable argument that CDs are not used as much today, especially with the expansive nature of the Internet. For the sake of discussing new media, though, CDs should still be noted.

New media will also include websites. These platforms are great for the sake of distributing information, which is great in its own right, and it's a point that no web designer should forget. It's also worth noting that they can help businesses reach new heights, since just about everyone has access to the Internet these days. As far as the most used platforms are concerned, it's easy to point out websites, and their place in new media.

Even though these may be just a few examples of new media, this does not take away from their usefulness in the long term. Artists who would like to reach as great of success as possible must know how to use new media. Even though this can be used simply to store information, others may see more proactive ways to bring this into effect. If you'd like to get into art, hopefully you will get plenty of use out of new media as well.
