New Ways To Swap Stuff

By Olivia Cross

Before money was introduced, people would barter goods and services. With the connections offered by the internet, people are discovering bartering once again. All kinds of websites offer the option to swap stuff. It is an easy way to get rid of what you do not want and get what you do want without having to part with any cash.

On some of the larger websites, people can post all kinds of items and offer many different services too. There are also niche websites dedicated to exchanging particular items like books or clothing whilst others offer only services such as pet sitting or baby sitting. Some websites only serve a particular area and people can meet up with one another more easily.

There are some safety risks involved in swapping but most of these websites have strict rules to protect users. Swapping less costly items usually involves shipping or posting. It is obviously more risky when it comes to more expensive items like cars and certain precautions need to be taken.

Exchanging goods in person is always a good idea as it offers the opportunity to both parties to see the goods. When arranging to meet someone it is preferable to arrange a meeting somewhere like a coffee shop. Taking a friend along makes the whole procedure even safer.

If you love the latest fashions but cannot always afford them, join a worldwide community that swaps clothes, accessories and even cosmetics. Some websites are designed to help parents with swapping gently used clothing and toys with other parents whose children are different ages. You can post your kids used clothing for other users to pick from. Books, CDs, video games and electronic devices also have websites devoted to swapping.

Sometimes the time at which swaps are posted influence their popularity. Posting Christmas decorations for swapping in January is not a good idea but if they are posted in November, they are far more likely to get attention. The same goes for Halloween costumes and other items specific to a particular holiday or season.

These websites usually offer free membership. Some of them have more tight knit communities and require recommendation by a member to join. They also operate in different ways with some arranging the swapping between members so that they do not communicate with one another at all. Others operate on a point system, giving points for items which the member can use to get other items.

For those who are cash strapped but possess many unwanted goods, this is the perfect solution. They can easily replace the goods they do not want with those they do want without parting with any money at all. The popularity of such sites is growing all the time, indicating just how many people appreciate bartering.
